Very Good Coffee Grinder! July 10, 2010 J. T. Hwang (Chicago, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been using this coffee grinder for past seven years, on daily basis. I'm pretty much worthless without coffee. Starting with off-the-shelf beans, this coffee grinder does a very good job with even grind consistency, especially for drip coffee. I would say that it is a bit weak on the coarse side (with bit uneven consistency), if you plan to use this for French Press coffee. About six years ago, I've started purchasing beans from Sweet Marias in California; with their very large premium beans, this roaster does get jammed up pretty frequently. Work around for that problem is to keep the hopper empty and load up beans as I need them (timer is absolutely useless for dosing). I do keep chopsticks that I use for stirring coffee when unsing manual pour over drip or Aeropress, and use it to stir the beans within the hopper in the event it stops feeding beans.
If you plan to use this grinder for espresso, probably should look for a Rocky or some other unit with flat burrs. In using Aeropress and very short brew time, I've tried to push it to espresso grind consistency, but the burrs would rub when it would run out of beans. Perhaps this is normal for espresso grinds, but I really don't like to hear metal grinding sounds and probably can't be good for the longevity of the burss (grinding mechanism).
Case and the grind container is all plastic, so I keep it inserted on an angle with the base sticking out to minimize static. This problem went away with use over time, but initially noticed that grinds would fly out of the container when it is pulled out. Unit is well weighted and stays put.
I've also purchased replacement burr and upgrade kits to prevent bean grinds from ending up in the housing. Been a very very reliable machine, especially at the low price point.
If you are looking for a very decent and reliable coffee grinder for drip coffees, Solis is a very well matched unit. I would give it 4.5 stars for drip coffee use. Now if it could grind twice as fast and not jam up, I would pay twice the cost!
BOMBproof January 13, 2010 R.T. See (the Palouse) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We replaced a blade grinder some 4 yrs ago with this Solis. it is absolutely bombproof, with no changes in performance after some 1500-2000 uses thus far. We have NEVER had to clean it. The only performance issue we have faced is once in a while a few beans will not feed, it changes to a high pitched whine, and you shake it a little to cause the misfeed to flow again. GREAT product, and worth all that we spent. If you too like long lasting, quality products this will be one. Good job, Solis! Whoops, I hear the coffee finishing brewing...off to more important things...
I wish to edit the review I placed here a year ago. November 28, 2009 J. Webb (Marble Falls, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We have had this grinder for about a year now. I gave it a good review after using it for a couple of weeks. It worked well except the dial kept falling off. It would only run for about 30 - 45 seconds before jamming so we couldn't walk away from it. We immediately turned it off when this happened so that the motor wouldn't be damaged. If left idle for a few minutes it would again perform satisfactorily. It ground the coffee well if we just had patience. We have used it a couple of times a week, mostly on #11 grind for espresso.
This morning (after the warranty expired of course) it just quit. We think a small pebble or petrified coffee bean became stuck in it. The paperwork told us how to extract it and we did. It still didn't work. My husband took it apart but discovered that the gear assembly is a sealed unit and that is probably where the problem lies. Since he couldn't go any further at that point we just tossed it in the trash.
Considering the problems we have had after the initial honeymoon period, I can no longer recommend this grinder. I think we will buy a cheapie at Wal-Mart and just plan on replacing it every couple of months.
Baratza Maestro Plu June 13, 2009 E. Billingsley (Pearl City, Hawaii) This is my third burr grinder and by far the best. The motor is very strong and geared down so the burrs grind at low speed. Compaired to the other grinders I have used, it is very clean with little mess. I would recomend this grinder to anyone looking for a unit under $200.
Thank you for reading.
destroys the hopes of the coffee June 9, 2009 stephen g 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
This coffee grinder succeeds in all areas of it's design. It successfully takes full roasted beans, and grinds them to a pulp a serial killer would be proud of.
If you want no trace of the original beans left, I suggest you use this grinder. It is able to vary the size and coarseness of the finished product, allowing you to seamlessly integrate the evidence into an ordinary store bought coffee can, allowing you to easily get away with the murder of coffee beans everywhere.
However, if the darkness of the beans differs, it won't take Gil Grissom to figure out that you mixed your nuts, and that is not my problem.
